Story 6: Vladyslav Husak, biology student

“Growing up, I was always curious about the natural world around me–I was fascinated by the complexity and diversity of living organisms and the intricate processes that govern their behavior,” says Vladyslav Husak, a fourth-year undergraduate biology student at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Husak is one of Ukraine’s top students in biology, with an outstanding track record. He won the National Biology Tournament and National Biology Olympiad, and received an honorary diploma for scientific achievement in the field of chemistry and biology.

As a hardworking and competitive student, he supplemented his university education by completing “dozens of courses in programming and Data Science on Coursera,” which helped him refine his skills. “In the next five to ten years, my goal is to become a successful bioinformatician who applies Machine Learning techniques to solve complex scientific problems,” he says.

Currently, he is involved in a scientific project investigating the biological activity of calixarenes, a macrocycle or cyclic oligomer based on phenols linked by a short bridge. “The main method used in this project was spectrofluorimetry, which enabled us to measure the levels of biologically active compounds in mitochondria,” he says.

Husak’s passion for science is fueled by his deep curiosity and desire to understand how things work. “The thrill of discovery, the excitement of unraveling complex concepts, and the satisfaction of uncovering new knowledge drive me to pursue a career in science,” he says.
