We stand in firm solidarity with the people of Ukraine, particularly those engaged in academic pursuits, such as scientists, faculty members, and students, who are currently enduring unimaginable violence. The targeting of university buildings and educational centers by Russian troops poses a grave threat not only to the lives of Ukrainian citizens but also to the scientific community of the country.
As members of the global scientific community, we recognize that it is our moral responsibility, as well as that of the international community, to extend all possible assistance to the people of Ukraine. And we urge the global scientific community and funding agencies, including NIH, NSF, and the National Academy of Sciences, to allocate substantial financial support to assist scientists from Ukraine.
We condemn the physical violence, cyberattacks, disinformation, and all other weapons employed by the aggressor against free and democratic Ukraine. These actions not only threaten the safety and security of individuals but also undermine the very foundations of scientific progress. We will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine in their pursuit of academic freedom, safety, and security. Let us never forget that progress knows no borders, and that the work being done by these scholars is essential to the betterment of us all.
