University of Wroclaw Awards Rector’s Scholarship to Our Scholar Matvii Mykhailichenko

We’ve got some fantastic news to share! Matvii Mykhailichenko, an incredibly dedicated former student from Kyiv Polytechnical Institute and currently Bioinformatics for Ukraine scholar and educator, has been awarded the prestigious Rector’s Scholarship at the University of Wroclaw.  His journey to this point is nothing short of inspiring!

When things got tough in Ukraine due to the Russian invasion, Matvii didn’t let that stop him. He made a brave move to Wroclaw, Poland to keep chasing his academic dreams and became a student of University of Wroclaw. But that’s not all. Remember the “Mystery of highly variable genes (HVGs)” project at EEBG Sumemr school 2023 in Moldova? That was Matvii’s brainchild, thanks to a grant from the EMBL Huber group. This project was a huge hit during the school, which was then awarded the “Most Innovative Approach” nomination, and it really put Matvii on the map as an emerging student in the field.

Matvii looks back at his journey with pride, saying, “That EMBL Huber group grant was a game-changer for me. It led me to CSAMA, where I learned all about scRNA-seq, and gave me the chance to lead the ‘Mystery of HVGs’ project at EEBG school in Moldova. Winning the ‘Most Innovative Approach’ award was just the cherry on top!”

Now, Matvii is all about giving back. He’s super passionate about helping other Ukrainian scholars find their footing in bioinformatics and biomedical research. He gets what they’re going through and is totally committed to supporting their work. In Matvii’s words, “I’m here to lend a hand to fellow Ukrainian scholars in this field. I’ve been in their shoes, and I know how much this support can mean.”

We’re so proud of Matvii and everything he’s accomplished. He’s a real inspiration to us all here at the University of Wroclaw and the Bioinformatics for Ukraine community. Way to go, Matvii!
